Hi,
Looking for some advice on my 1995 C180 92,000 miles, starting problem. Jumped into car yesterday morning. Engine turned over and almost started. Tried again but only got what I can describe as a high pitched whine. Can't look at it till Wednesday so was hoping you guys could offer some advice on checks I could perform then. My hope is that it is simply a Jammed starter motor but my fear is that it may be a broken timing Chain. I have been unable to confirm if the engine is turning in the keyas I was on my own.Having read through the forum I will try rocking the car in gear and possibly thumping the starter motor. Any obvious checks I can perform to confirm the integrity of the timing Chain?? Any thoughts would be helpful.

take off oil filler cap, get some one to to key and see if cam is turning, sounds to me like some teeth are missing from flywheel/starter!

Probably the sprag clutch on the starter motor bendix failed......if so, new starter motor required.

Hi, i hav a w208 clk 230k with 160,000 on the clock. It broke down suddenly on the motor way and dont start since. When i turn over the engine the cams dont turn. Does that mean my timing chain has definately broke?

Sorry to say that I think that it has, or a camshaft broken.

I take it that you have taken off the top cover to look
