First step, new battery, remove plug leads and see if it will turn over first.

I bought a r170 slk200, 2 weeks ago, not been started for over 2 years. Put a battery in it, jumped in the drivers seat, turned the key and it fired up immediately and ran lovely.
No big deal, I've started car engine's up after many many years of sitting dormant, just with a charged battery and easy start or fresh fuel ;)

Started my 911SC last month after an eight year sleep.

Fitted a new battery then turned the key and Bob's your uncle.

Quick blast up the back roads then an oil change, (last ever) MoT and change to Historic Vehicle registration class.

:)

Of course, it could have burst into flames and all ended very differently

If laid up for any time I always disable a start attempt until I see oil pressure or after oil light has gone out for a few seconds and I never gun the motor after start until some heat showing on temp guage.

Near all excess engine wear occurs at start up on cold engine.. Historically they run 88 for a reason.

Anything over 7 years dormancy I draw the line. Then I check the engine will turn by hand, remove the plugs and oil the bores with my little oil can. Oil check, charged battery and spin it over. As you say, once the oil light goes out, I'll refit the plugs and see what happens ;)
I have another 7 plus year car to strip, engine was last started 6 or 7 years ago. It turns by hand, but very tightly.

Legitstreetcars on YT made a few videos starting old mercs that have been sitting. He mixes some concoction with atf to put down the bores.

Bit extreme. Just a little of oil in use on that motor good nuff. Once oil press reading I allow start. My little NG has samr method even after it's not run for a few weeks. I away back to UK in Sept pick that and dog up.

When I worked at a mechanics garage, us lads would pour engine oil down the exhaust pipe when the engines were out being rebuilt. It was a huge joke when the engines warmed up and started to smoke. The Journey men were not impressed when they realised what we'd done.
It just reminded me when you mentioned a little motor oil :D

Biggest problem I find with starting vehicles that have been stood is damage from stale fuel.
