Hi All,
I am looking for some pointers in getting my 1994 320 coupe started. It has been stood for a while and started fine for a long time until it ran out of petrol and i flatened the battery. I have recharged the battery, put 4 gallon of petrol in and it wont start. It fires on first turnover but just wont carry on firing. I have used easy start and the car will run on this but once spraying stops it dies. This i think points to a fuel problem but i dont know where to start or how to diagnose the problem so any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks Eric

Crap in the fuel filter........that's the problem not the solution.

Whenever you run dry there's a chance of this, especially with an oldish car that's probably got allsorts in the tank.

Pull off the fuel line between the tank and filter (near the tank) and check fuel runs out (should be obvious) . After that, it's just a process of finding the blockage by working methodically towards the engine.

Good luck, and wear eye protection!

OVP find the over voltage relay next to the battery, pull it out and plug it back in with the battery connected, car should start thereafter, there is a cover behind the battery the OVP relay is in there, cant miss it, it has a fuse on the top.

You could also undo the gland nut where the fuel pipe goes into the injection, and turn on the ign to see if petrol runs out.

If it does not post back

Smart + others :)
subject to the above , did the car backfire at any stage?? check the 1" bore breather pipe that enters the lower metering unit rubber( below metering head and ali top plate.) it may have blown out giving it a large air leak?

320 coupe starting problem

Hi All,
Thanks for the replys. i have removed all the relays i can find and replaced them with the battery connected. this however hasnt solved the problem, however i did notice one of the relays, a small bosh relay rattled a little when i picked it up and i dont think that is healthy so i shall replace it. i suppose that could be the problem as the car doesnt even fire at all now! i shall however see if i can check the fuel lines and pump. i am gutted with this as the car had no problems at all previously. Does any one know if the diagnostic plug can give any info without attaching it to a machine? cheers eric
