STARTING PROBLEMS - DIESEL 190

, my girlfriend has got a 190 Diesel 2000 litre J-reg manual merc. About 4 months ago lOADS of smoke starting coming from her car to an actent that she couldn`t drive it. This chap who lives next door to her dad owns a citreon garage who took the car in and totally reconditioned the engine costing £600.
She has had the car back, everthing o.k apart from STARTING THE DAM THING. You turn the ignition on one turn but the coil light dosn`t come on, anyway, you wait for about 4 secs then turn the key and the car just tugs/chokes away(dosn`t start), you then wait about another five secs and try again, it still tugs until about 7-10 secs it starts and then the coil light comes on !.
If you travel a few miles stop a few mins it then starts first time.This guy said he has tested the heater batteries and they show a current going thru.
CAN ANYBODY THROW ANY LIGHT ON THE MATTER BECAUSE I THINK IT IS GETTING HER DOWN HAVING JUST SPENT £600 AND SHE LOVES HER MERC

It definelty sounds like it is trying to start with either none or only a couple of the glow plugs.

I would take it to a garage who have some Diesel Knowledge, and ask them if they can test if the glowplugs are working ok. I wouldnt imagine its too hard a job to test, and may only cost a few quid.

Just out of interest, what work did this bloke do for his £600?

First I must say. If the garage has recon the engine for £600, you got a REAL bargin. But then I would expect it to start. So............ I would take it back to them again and let them sort it. I think its resonable to expect that after reconditioning the engine. The engine should start under all conditions.

Deffinately a problem with the glow plug control unit.

OK, So it smoked a bit before the overhaul, but at least it started!! they had the car, £600 changed hands, now it doesn't start!!..........Their problem!! get it bach to them.
