I have a 1998 C180 Elegance Auto. Recently it has developed a fault whereby there is an intermetent problem starting the car.

It is always fine first thing in the morning or first time start of day, however, after being a while and resting, it sometimes refuses to start.

The engine keeps churning however does not start.

If I wait for half an hour or so and retry, it starts.

This is happening more and more of late and getting frustrting.

Anyone else faced similar problem? Any ideas as to cause or solution??

Thanks.

Definitely sounds like crank sensor to me - had very similar problems with mine. Swapped it for a new one (about £70 ish + max 1 hour labour) and the problem is gone, back to 100% reliable starting 8) Definitely worth a shot even if it doesn't turn out to be the issue anyway as the damn things wear out and its bound to go at some point. Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,
Mark

Thanks everyone. Unanimous thoughts seem to be crank shaft sensor. Am going to take to garage next week and ask them to look at it. Will update outcome. Thanks.

Sorry to hijack the thread but you guys seem to know about C180 elegances. I've tried searching for a thread that covers this but there is not one.

Anyway, the problem is that when the car is started there is a short sharp beep like a warning sound. This sound occurs as the car is starting. As the dash lights have gone out I cannot tell if there is a warning light on too.

Any ideas what this could be?

What year is the car? Exactly what lights have gone, all the lights or some of the lights.
The only thing that beeps in my car is when door is open, if lights are on, or handbrake on warning beep. Really need to know the year of car to get an answer. (Might be better to start a new thread in Electrics, Vacuum, Ignition and ECU)
