I have just checked my car after a deviously positioned pot hole was encountered in Nottingham yesterday. Looking around all four wheels this morning only two are now undamaged (only purchased the car three weeks ago with all wheels and tyres having no damage whatsoever). The other two having dings in the alloy wheels and small chunks taken out of the side wall protector beads.

I drive this car (2016 MB E220d convertible) slower than my other cars and am always on the look out for potholes! I know the tyres are low profile but we now seem to have third world road surfaces. Perhaps another sign of the nations ongoing slide?

Saving money, as claims are feasibly cheaper than repairs.
Part of the 'don't drive' persuasion.
Greater wear and tear as road use is greater, feasibly by HGV's also.
Closing roads for repairs are difficult for the greater use reason.
The more we spend on car repairs the greater the tax revenue.

The government will only give a t*ss if they are likely to lose votes, that being local and national.

. Car tax should be bound to building roads and repairing them. And it's gov we need to go after not council, they just get what gov agree to pay out.
I wud lov to know what % of receipts are actually spent on the primary purpose of imposing the tax. I don't care what they call it, I am paying to use the road, simples, no have car no pay tax..

Although i do have an E350 i also have a Toyota Hilux which i cannot damage no matter how hard i try!!
High profile tyres on small rims is the only way these days.
My R is on 255/55 18s and it deals with these roads with aplomb.

Another advantage of the 'Hi' Lux is being able to see the bl**dy things due to being elevated.
Viano good, 211 not so.

The roads are particularly bad at the moment. All the wet weather has had a disastrous effect round here.

The cold spell we had meant the water in the cracks in the roads froze, this then broke the surface up leading to some horrendous potholes :(

Why do they not have this problem in really COLD countries? Same as frozen aircraft at airports. I recall flying in to Frankfurt in 1996 when it was -20C and my connecting flight to Amsterdam was not delayed.

It's not been bad this year, yet.
A bit chilly, but not prolonged.

In Germany major roads have 80-120cm of substrate - we’re lucky if we have 50cm…

We had a really cold spell recently up here days of below freezing.

Personally (and I'm probably alone here) I would prefer Local Authorities to spend money on essential services ( and not chuck money away on nonsense projects like they seem to do), rather than in effect subsidising car manufacturers who seem unable to manufacture a wheel to cope with modern road conditions. Maintaining roads to perfection would be eye wateringly expensive and we would all have to pay in the end. GOG moan over.

It might be that if the roads were fit for purpose we wouldn't be so often waiting behind a cyclist, in case they need swing out to avoid a Jeremy Wine, who might fall off his penny farthing after hitting a pot hole.

Sheffield roads used to be horrendous, the worst I have ever seen. Not been for 20 years so they might have improved.

We have the street next to mine being repaired yet again, the craters in it get filled and then a few weeks later more crater appear either in the repair locations or elsewhere. Well they finished the street and left half the craters, only doing the ones with a yellow mark around them.

As for wheels to be stronger I think they are largely well built. Just look at how people on 40/30 profile wheels drive without our care, hitting craters, bouncing of kerbs etc… there is only so much a wheel can take coupling careless driving, craters, speed and weight. I can’t keep my car in a straight line on most roads and motorways as I try my best to dodge every one and happily bring traffic to a crawl should I need to go over an imperfection.

The only way going forward now is claiming for suspension/steering/wheel damage with evidence such as a dash cam showing you can’t avoid etc, it then use Timestamp camera app to photo/video the extent of craters and repair bills for tyres/wheels/suspension steering.
