Strange...when I first get into my e220 cdi the steering is generally light and comfortable.
When the car is warmed up the steering feels heavier especially turning corners and slow speeds.
The (?serpentine) belt groans or makes a rubbing noise sometimes!!

Has anybody else ecountered this minor problem.
Everything works ok...except this heavier steering when hot.
Have I diagnosed the problem myself ie..a worn belt which loosens as the car gets hot.......

Sorry if this sounds daft..I am not mechanically technical.
Any tips most appreciated.

2 things when cold. Firstly as you say, the belt will be colder so may grip better and secondly, when cold, the revs at idle will be a touch higher, supplying a few extra rpm to the pump. If the power steering pump is past it's best then I guess that could make all the difference.
Low fluid would make it whine and judder so I can't see this being the culprit but you can't discount the steering rack.

If its worn and noisy then start with the belt (you shouldn't really be able to hear it over the 220 engine). You don't want it failing on you and it will be the cheapest starting point by far.

What car is it, what age and mileage?

Thanks JBerks,
The car is E220CDI 2001 model and its now 108,000 miles

Is it possible for a steering pump to actually work below par....I kinda thought it was an all or nothing bit of machinery....I think your belt proposal sounds like the first option.

Yes its a strange one...car feels light for the first 5 minutes then the steering "feel" gets heavier....not loss of power steering just a change
