Hi all,

Was about to purchase a 2yr old C270 this weekend, today the MB dealer called and told me that the car had gone in for final inspection and that the steering column needs to be replaced. The car has done just 30k miles, I'm left somewhat confused, is it likely the steering column really needs to be replaced or do they just want to focus on new sales on Saturday.

please let me know your thoughts.

thanks,
John

Hi & Welcome,

If the car has been curbed hard then the steering rack could have been damaged. There is more money in used than in new for a lot of dealers so I don't think that is the answer, I think they have found a problem and are fixing it, simple as that.

The good news is that they have found it, I would ask the mechanic or service manager (not the salesman) what had damaged the rack, I would also make sure that all the wheels are round and not damaged.
You will have a years worth of MB warranty which is very comprehensive so you should be ok.

Your right, I don't think I would have enjoyed that bill too much in +12 months time. I guess what struck me as odd was the car drove very well no pulling to the left like the previous C220, or any wandering. I was thinking great no bolt kits needed on this one!

That is probably the problem it didn't pull to the left so they have to fix it :p

It could just be faulty. I had the rack replaced on a 15 month old E class. No damage - just not quite right.
At least the inspection picked it up. I had bits of trim missing from mine when I went to collect and they didn't pick up on that (infact had polished the paintwork where the trim should have been!)
