Hi everyone. My car, C350cdi 2011.99k miles Just returned to car outside a shop put ignition key in, no buzzing sound, and it doesn't release steering lock. No power to ignition to close electric windows, radio still works. Car has full MB service history so is eligible for mobilo assistance. I've just phoned mobilo, who have appointed RAC to attend. Any suggestions? Steering lock solenoid, or EIS ,or both

I'm hoping so, and not the EIS aswell. RAC due around 45mins. If it needs recovering to workshop, I'm asking for the Mercedes authorised independent where I've had it serviced since 2016.

I had the same issue with my 2014 E350. Lots of trying and finally the ignition lights came on and I was able to start the car. Since then I get no buzz when putting the key in and the steering lock is permanently disingaged. It's been like that for a few weeks now and I really must pull it apart and change the steering lock motor.

A belated update. Car got recovered to authorised workshop Thursday, had a phone call this morning saying after connected to star diagnostics, showed a fault code referring to ESL failure.
Total price for 1hr star diagnostics, new ESL & Labour ,Inc.vat £700. (Originally i was quoted £740, negotiated down to £700)
Incidentally I contacted another authorised workshop 25 miles away, for a second opinion, they quoted £789 Inc. Vat.for same job.
What do you think regarding price ?

A friend of mine had the same fault in a C180 a couple of years ago. I think he paid MB £800 for the job.

Crikey, makes me feel slightly better about the cost!
Workshop quoted £381.60 for the ESL part.
I had a W203, MY 2001, and in 2008 the ESL and EIS failed, was corrupt, that cost me all in job £600 cash. That was a different Mercedes independent workshop.

I had this happen to my C350 Cdi last September. My local locksmiths fitted an emulator with programmed keys and removed the broken lock for £250. I don,t have a steering lock now, but since this is a common fault that can happen at any time, I,m alright about it. Steve.

I did consider the emulator option, but decided against It ,as it could be a potential problem if insurance company isn't notified of this non factory modification.

I use a Disklok. I was told that as long as you have a lock for the steering it,s ok. The RAC man who came to my car at the time put me onto the locksmiths and car sailed through the m.o.t. Steve:)

Sounds expensive but then dealers generally are.

I was under the impression that the steering lock is part of the mot these days.

I did a Google search on this and it says as long as you have some other kind of immobiliser fitted a steering lock is not required, as I was advsed by my RAC approved locksmiths. Steve.
