Hi all, I think there is a bit of play in my car's steering. It's mainly when the steering wheel is centre, and I move it slightly left or right. After about the 10 to 4 and 10 past 8 positions the steering seems ok. More noticeable on the motorway if I steer left or right, the car seems to catch the steering up.

My tyres are almost due a change, could this cause it? I also feel what seems like a bar moving under the car when I'm moving. Mercedes said there was nothing wrong with it  it'll be the tyres.

I'm there tomorrow, and won't be leaving until the brakes are done. I could poop a brick at times on the Motorway. I feel almost on tenterhooks.

What car is it ?.

With the engine running and the wheels straight ahead by just rocking the steering wheel you should see the wheels move without much play, how much depends on the car

It's a C220 CDi Coupe. Seems to move a little less than it should but that could be me being paranoid.

Look after your tyres, swap them front to rear every few thousand miles.
Worn front tyres can cause the problem you describe they can also make the car very sensitive to road camber and you have to lean the steering slightly towards the centre of the road, very tireing if you are on a long journey.

Thank you wireman, I hope it just is the tyres. I'll change them soon and post the result :D making me look a clown, but nothing new there :D

It is exactly as you describe in all honesty.
