Hi I have a GLE 250, coming up to six years old, but only 20,000 miles on the clock. Steering goes on a round about, as if someone is trying to wrestle the wheel from you. get it off the roundabout and stop. steering is extremely stiff, limp home (4/5 miles) and get it recovered next day. Told it needs a new steering rack, I find it incredible that happens in 20,000 miles. no off roading, nothing excessive, I am retired so only family travel, I just cannot understand why this should fail. anyone any notions? or similar experience. I took reliability for granted with the name Mercedes.

Hello and welcome. The steering rack on your car is not a simple construct and has many moving parts, without fault finding it’s impossible to say why it has failed.

Sure there wasn’t a recall for your model? I know MB were doing a recall for steering racks of some sort. If it adds to the conversation, I’m waiting for the local dealer to get hold of a new ‘thrust piece’ as there is plenty of play in the rack. They’ve got to get the rack off and test it - if it’s beyond a certain limit of play - it’ll be a new rack. Nov16 car with 55k miles. Can’t believe it.
