Steering Rack

Hi, I have a Mercedes C350 and have had an issue with the steering rack. It makes a hideous grinding noise and feels like the power steering has gone. I've had a mechanic have a look at it and he says I need a whole new steering rack fitted but says he can't get the part and even if he did for some reason changing it would wipe the CPU. This doesn't sound right to me, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I have been told to scrap the car for parts, but that seems ridiculous over a steering rack.

I'd get it to a Mercedes indie for their advice, sounds like your mechanic isn't a Mercedes specialist

Presume you've checked the obvious.....fluid, serpentine belt, tensioner, Water pump not seizing?

As does your mechanic,
Without guessing, although I am it could also be a driveshaft. Have you checked the cv boots for splits, rips any dirt in there and they are gonners

hi, have you check wether the pump is mechanical(run of the belt) or electric?.
