If you were to change the stereo on a 2001 C-Class for a different stereo would you lose the functions on the steering wheel buttons for adjusting the track/volume etc?

It's driving me mad not having my cds to listen to but after a month of thinking about it I would rather pay for a new stereo if I can keep the functions of the buttons than pay someone to repair the old one. I got seriously stung on car audio repairs before where the job ended up costing more than the car was worth.

Thanks in advance.

I think you can buy aftermarket radios then purchase a wiring adaptor which allows you to keep your steering wheel controls, i think you will lose your display in centre console though,

Thanks for the answer.

Just to clarify, 'display in centre console', would that be the screen on the stereo or the screen behind the steering wheel? Having a blonde day today, too much shopping in the sales!

Autoleads do adaptors for most cars, but yes, you will lose the display on the dashboard which shows the radio station/cd track info should you change the stereo, this will still be shown on the stereo faceplate though.

Sounds daft but make sure your replacement has the facility to take remote control!

Remote Control??? Does that refer to the buttons or should I have a separate clicker like for the TV?

The radio works but when you put in a cd ( I have tried all of mine) it doesn't make a loading sound then says CDS ERR after 10-15 seconds.

There are good working Audio 30's on Ebay for £30, it should be a £50-£60 job to change the pick up,,I used to do it

So I could buy that & some sort of lead then someone who knows what they're doing could make it work with the buttons in my car?

Sounds good but if I have misunderstood I do apologise.

hit submit and see if your model is covered.

It is a fairly simple job to fit, if you are capable of installing a stereo you should be able to do the work. It may require removal of the dashboard to run cables and make connections.

I have done it before in my old renault megane, took half an hour or so and most of that was taking off and replacing the dashboard.

However, as Television says, a far simpler option may be to buy an identical unit from ebay, would solve a lot of messing about.

I did the conversion in my renault due to the car not having a CD player, just cassette and I wanted the ability to play mp3 etc.

If you just want CD getting another identical unit is going to be the simplest option and you'll retain all the functions of your current car setup

I just had a look on ebay & there are only 3 the same as mine. All of them would cost more than it would to just replace it with something different. I also don't really want to wait for the postage as my brother in law has offered to do it for me tomorrow if I can get the bits I need in the morning & getting him down to a date is like gold dust!

Also just been looking at the autoleads thing. Don't know if I'm looking at the wrong bit but the only info I got was about telemute leads. Is this only about the phone function as I don't use the phone bit?

Ah, that tool only lists the telemute function

I shall look up the partnumbers for the leads you need, assuming you get that JVC cd player

It's ok you've already been a huge help. I think I'll just pop into Halfords in the morning & let them try to sell me the right stuff. If that fails I have some numbers for some local audio shops who might be able to supply the bits. It's all got a bit to confusing for me so I shall leave it to the men.

Thanks for trying to guide me through it.

The spreadsheet is a little confusing, you could give autoleads a ring on 0800 7839125 and make sure they do make the appropriate lead.

I'm sure you'll get your tunes back at some point!
