HI GUYS, around a month ago i noticed a steering wheel shake at around 40-65 and my car didnt feel right at all so at first i thought wheel balance! had that done no difference. then i had new ball joints/steering damper and steering colum bushes as this was advisories on the last m.o.t so i wasnt to bothered about that and the car drive is very much improved{much nicer steering etc. but still i get a slight vibration in the steering wheel at 40-65 not all the time but most! so i started blaming the aftermarket wheels but ive had them on 6 months and im sure it was ok before last month!! ive been back to have the wheels balanced but the guy reckons its the aftermarket wheels, i can understand what hes saying but like i said they were fine up until last month. it brakes fine no wobble and drives straight and true! does anyone have any ideas as its really annoying me now as my car would be perfect except this. any advice much appreciated. like i say it is much better but not perfect im wondering could it be tyre pressure etc?? i carnt see any point in going back to get the wheels balanced again although on other posts this is what people are saying?? is it worth goin to another tyre place to get them balanced again??? many thanks in advance

MB Wheels centre on the hub and not the bolts, aftermarket ones may not be hubcentric so you won't get them centred on the hub without a spacer. What this means is that you will notice a wobble that will affect the whole car.

the steering shaking

hi i had same problem and trie to balance the wheels but for nothing. then i took them to an engineering service and they told me that the wheels where not aligned or better they where not perfectly round, due to the poor roads. They aligned them for me and now it is ok. but it takes some engineering work. i am not sure f the right word is alignment but i guess you understand it. This happens to the wheel when you hit a hole or something

Do any of your friends, family or colleagues have a similar car, The reason why i ask is because at my place, if we suspected the wheels, we would just borrow the set off another car for five mins to elimnate or confirm this.

I understand this is not so easy when not in a workshop but could save you a fortune on new wheels if it isnt them.

Hi if you can steer through it it's the front, if not it's the rear .... jack up car at front and spin both wheels to see if there's a off center spin looks a bit wonky my be slight but that could be the problem, slap that one on the back and re-balance ..it's a real lottery out there with balance machines, and a lot of threads on them, if nothing obvious then it's trail and error.

They might have got the wheels centred the first time they fitted them. If you jack it up and take all the bolts out does the wheel still sit snugly on the hub or can you move it up, down, left or right?

yes blobcat i think youre right ive had the balancing re done at a specialist today plus tracking was a mile out drove a few miles all felt great then hit 60-80 on the motorway and it frikin at it again! guy at tyre place did say the wheels dont fit snug, its the bolts that centre them so im sure the wheels are c..p. shame tho as they look great. plan B-99 is tomorow im gonna take all the wheels of and put the originals back on to see what happens. if that dosent work im going to burn the lot{joke] no seriously its a real pain... thanks pal
