Hi.
I have a new SL350 fitted with the latest command system and i was wondering if anyone has experienced any problems with the speakers bouncing/distorting at high volume particularly on tracks with a some bass.
My problem is intermittent - the stereo sounds fine at normal volume but if you crank it up a bit the speakers really bounce and distort. Benz have had the car in, looked at it and replaced the speakers but the problem is still there.

Just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar in their cars fitted with the new Command Unit.

Thanks
Nick

Its best if you head to an audio specialist.

I had a car (which shall remain nameless) which did the same. The OEM audio head unit did not have a powerful enough amp installed. it was a 6W unit driving 6 speakers. They advised to fit an alpine 4x40W external amp. Made a huge difference and the OEM speakers were able to handle the extra power.

It may be that the standard unit amp is breaking down under the full load due the amount of speakers it is driving. If your dealer has replaced the speakers then this is what I would look at.

Stereo problems with new command

Thanks for your help. Your probably right although im a bit peeved at spending over 60K on a car with this particular fault and having to send it elsewhere to have the problem looked at. What makes it more annoying is that the problem doesnt occur when the car is standing - only when im driving along. Certain tracks you can crank right up and they sound fine, others distort terribly.
Would the additional amp need to be fitted somewhere in the vehicle (boot, behind seats etc)? im also concerned that the warranty would be affected.
its so frustrating on an otherwise perfect dream car!
Regards

I know the feeling.

I am not sure an audio specialist will want to do the work but getting their advice will help. If its a fault they will advise the best course of action. If it comes to adding an amp it will be placed out of site generally behind the dash.

The reason I say see an specialist is they know what they are talking about and can help whereas the MB dealers quite often are jack of all trades, and I dont mean that unfairly, but they do have a lot of cars to look after and you cant really be expected to be knowlegable about all of them. Still you would think they would have a database that can be accessed from anywhere to help them. Save repeated journeys to them to eventually find someone who knows!!

Have a good New Year.
