Hi all,

3rd Owner of a 1995 registered C200 Elegance, bought it in 2001. Lovely motor only let me down once when the original battery just died on me last summer.

The automatic arial does not fully extend when activated. Sometimes only one sections extend sometimes two and sometimes all sections extend. I sometimes have to jump out the car run round the back and manually 'help' the arial fully extend and/or fully retract.

What can I do to make the arial fully extend and retract on its own?

Hi,

Had the same problem with the antenna on my C36, to be honest there is nothing you can do. I lubricated every bit of the damn thing, but because the fault is in the base part of the unit its futile.

I had mine changed for a new one and it works a treat, they do have a finite life span though so you may as well spend that 20 quid and get a new one :)

Thanks Simon,

Them guys at my local MB garage don't come cheap. Who actually replaced the arial, did you do it yourself?

The problem is usually a worn, damaged or partially seized telescopic aerial mast. The motor unit may well be OK.

MB dealerships sell replacement masts. I can't remember how much I paid about two years ago, but I do remember that it was not expensive.

There are different aerial manufacturers and types, even for the same Mercedes model, so get your dealer parts man to look at your aerial to ensure that you get the right replacement part.

It came with fitting instructions, and I fitted it myself in about 10 minutes.

No, I got Andy Gayle MB to do it during a service....I assume they just put a new mast on and not the whole unit since it only cost like 15 or 20 quid.

I've learned over the years of owning a variety of cars that when something involves removing interior trim and electrics, just let an expert deal with it! (something which I am not LOL).
