I have a C180 1995 my steering over the past few days have become stiffer than normal with a sqeaking\rubbing noise coming from the steering column.
Mechanic had a look he said the big rubber grommet around the steering column was dry he sprayed WD40 in it and squeaking stopped but is still heavy.

Anyone have any ideads. Thanks.

Check your tyre pressures and power steering fluid level. The C class has a different ball joint setup compared to the one in the photos.

Could a worn suspension bush on the wishbone be causing stiffer steering?

Try jacking up the front and see if the steering still feels stiff. If it does, then it is not a suspension bush.

From what you say, it's a balljoint somewhere that is causing the problem.

My problem was the ball joint on the nearside steering knuckle...I'm going to replace both once the dealer gets the correct part in. They got the wrong one in for some reason the other day (never happened before to be honest) I think it was a C class one they had.

You could have a look to see if there are any damaged rubber boots, but you would be lucky to spot this.

The C class part looks like it would be a lot easier to replace.
