--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I recently purchased a 1 owner 1992 190e with FSH 54,000 on the clock & generally in excellent condition. I bought the car of a dealer having had the car checked out and test driven. The car starts, ticks over & runs perfectly but on occasions & for no apparent reason the car cuts out usually after being kept on the same throttle setting when slowing down to approach a junction etc. The car restarts immediately and runs normally. All guages read as they should. I have taken the car to a local independant specialist & he has been unable to find anything wrong & says the car is excellent. The dealer who has serviced the car for the last 12 years has refused to comment although I note that the fuel pump relay was changed 12,000 miles ago, so this is unlikely to be the problem. When driving the car today it cut out again (and I thought there was the merest hint of of a burning smell). I think I have purchased a "problem motor". Looking through the service history & the money spent on the car I can only assume that the previous owner would have not balked at spending the money to have it sorted (the last service by a non merc garage notes that the throttle body housing was also "cleaned out". Any suggestions about where I go from here would be greatly appreciated. I bought the car as I will be doing some substantial mileage in the near future (Hereford to Edinburgh) and wanted to do the journey in comfort but clearly I can't trust it at the moment. Therefore if I am unable to get it sorted I will need to find an alternative. Therefore if there is anbody who wants to take a flier I would consider selling it or exchanging it for a 2.5 190D, as I say the car with the exception of my earlier comment is in excellent condition & has the following spec. 2 owners FSH. Pearl blue, electic windows front and rear and sunroof all working perfectly. switchable auto - standard & economy, CD player, brand new tyres with the only bodywork fault being the slightest of compressions on the o/s/f front wing.
I intend to take it back to the local independant specialist next week but I think he is running out of ideas

help !

Hi

this is a trip back into the memory banks, Over voltage protection relay is a possible culprit if your car has one. this could be a complete red herring - hope not

I think its one of two things... the OVP relay (as Piestore suggests) or more likely, the Fuel Pump relay.

In the photo, the OVP is circled in red and the FPR in green (has the word KICKDOWN printed on top).

The likely fix is to add a series resistor (300 to 500 ohms) in the lead from the temperature sensor near the back of the head.

Mercedes even has a kit to do this, but it's about £35 ! The resistor can likely be obtained from Maplins for 50p !

I thought that was a mod for the US so that the cars ran better on their poor quality fuel?

Doesn't it fool the engine into thinking it is running colder than it is so the mixture is richened up slightly?

Cheers spike,

extremely helpfull, pictures brilliant. Unlikely to be the fuel pump relay as a new one was fited 12,000 mile ago by mercedes (probably gives some indication of how long this problem has existed for). Will look at the OVP relay. Once again thanks very much.

Dont discount it just because it was changed.... you never know, the replacement may also be duff.
