Saw on motoring prog on 5 last week that crooks like to nick yer number plates to put on thier own car & run up huge bills in speeding camera fines and flying up bus lanes.

Prog said it was becoming all too common for people to lose thier plates in particular where they are just stuck on with double sided tape.

To combat this they suggested using non reversible headed screws for fixing back onto cars.

But what happens when someone nudges you & plate has to be removed to fix the problem, we'll have to be replacing plate as well, as it'll have to be removed forcefully & end up in pieces.

Personally, I think that plates should be provided by DVLC with Tax paid stickers attached like USA, and when camera's pick them up, licence can be scanned against registered vehicle to see if its on the right car, but the flaw in this that we will still not know what the cars original owner is or what plate it should rightly have on it.

Any views or advice anyone?

Regards, Keith.

the reason they steal your plates now is to have plates made, you need to provide details of the car. its easy to whip off someones plates.

first thing you must do is report it to the police. this way you have evidence that you plates were nicked and any bills your plate may run up will be void. the DVLA do check that the plates match the car details before they issue details for the prosecution services to issue a Notice. so if you are on hols, you wont find loads of bills.

Theives are more interested in making their cars fit in, so they can blend in, rather than avoid paying speeding bills!

you can buy a number plate holder that allows you to take your plates off easy. so providing you dont park on the road you can take them off yourself, this will stop them being stole and also if you car was nicked, it would look obvious! bit of a bind tho.

having the tax on the plate wont stop them nicking it! my view is car manufactures should design and internal section for the plates. so you have to get inside the car to put the plates in.

I think the car manufacturers should go down the same route as the buses and fit the plate behind a Perspex window that would certainly stop them from getting nicked.
You could have the plate fitted in the boot and Perspex fitting covering the plate on the outside, same for the front plate fit behind the bumper with Perspex fitted on the front.

If you are worried use tamper proof screws they can still be undone its just a bit more hassle so the theory is the thief will pick another easier car

In Sweden the government supply the plates. But along the top of the plate it gives date of first registration.
the tax that sticks on the rear plate says make of car.

Also interesting point over there, If the car is caught for speeding and no one admits it,. the person in who's name the car is registered is fined and gets points.

I wish I thought of this before, there must be a way of getting out of speeding things with this.

Why not just report your plates as being stolen and then drive about and set off the odd speed camera.

Another way to go would just get some false plates made up. Judging by some of the illegally spaced lettered plates kicking about, there are people that will make up plates without question.

I knew there was a flaw in this plan.

I meant that you report that your plates were stolen and you had replaced them.

Ideally what you want is some gizmo that can change your plates as you drive along. If you had something like a toblorone tube with three sets of plates you be difficult to track down.

In Danmark you can buy a clear plastic cover,( do you remember the little plastic gismose that show one picture when held in one direction and another when you turn it) well just put this on,and your number plate reads goblady gooch from any angle other than straight ahead, then spray it with the anti photo flash clear coating that will make the gobaldy gooch totally un readable.
