Hi there all, I was wondering if theres anyone with info on the sensors of a 280ce - 1973.
Mine starts fine but stops straight away and before i was suspecting it was conking out but now i feel its more of a cut out, maybe because a sensor is sening the wrong signal to the ecu? 02 sensor or pressure sensor? does anyone have much info on this? any help would be great thanks!

im not at all familiar with your vehicle model, however its unlikely that a 1973 car will have much more than a fairly basic engine management system so i dont think there will be that many sensors connected to it. its unlikely to have an o2 sensor. dont think they knew what 1 was in '73! may be fuel pressure sensor/regulator, and i assume its got electronic ignition rather than distributor points and condenser? ive had cars in the past would just cut out. that was traced to a bare wire to the condenser earthing out intermittently. if it only cuts out when you want it to idle, id check the vaccuum hoses first

Yeah i can't find many sensors! I tried taking the vacuum hose next to the distributor off and blocking as someone suggested but no different....nothing seems to make any difference? just cuts out the same no matter what i do! unless it doesn':confused:t fire at all? weird...

On earlier implementations of bosch injection systems there is a seperate fuel pump relay (with some electronics built into it) which is engaged by the starter circuit and held by a signal derived from the points or sensor in the distributor, if the wire from the ignition circuit is damaged or loose you get the symptoms you describe. The relay is a safety feature to prevent high pressure fuel spillages in the event of an accident, when the engine stops so does the fuel pump.

its a d-jetronic - 1973 280ce...if you have info on this model that would be very handy!!

Wireman, that's definatly down the lines of what im thinking, it really sounds like it cuts out rather then conks out. I just cleaned the plug with 3 wires to distributor and tried it unplugged and plugged after cleaning it. Doesn't appear to be any damage and it did the same either way. is this the wire your meaning? i followed it back to the bulkhead and it goes straight through where the ecu is. your ideas really sound like there in going in the right direction though!! only thing is when i clamp the return fuel line it runs, would this happen if it was the sensor you talking about or should that still cut off?

Do check the points in the bottom of the distributor,, the relay can get dry jointed and can be soldered up
