There is a small storage compartment in the centre consol positioned between the centre arm rest and the auto gear lever. The problem is it will open perfectly, but will not close, what type of mechanism is it that keeps it closed, is there a fix or does it require replacing?

The car is E240 Avantgarde

Thanks in advance

On my W210 there is a lift out container within that compartment, if that is not fully pushed home the lid doesn't always stay closed. If you remove the container you can see the mechanism, it maybe that the container is stopping it closing or that the mechanism has become disconnected. IIRC I have had to clip the mechanism back on in the past.

Thanks for quick response, it will not shut even with the container removed, but I will check the mechanism - is it much of a job to remove the complete thing.

Cheers

Just taken a look at mine and the mechanism is more hidden than I remember.

A very basic view from the Russian site here

The panel around the gear lever lifts off so it maybe an option to go in that way. You can use the start of PODs how to here to see how the panel around the gear lever comes out.

"A very basic view from the Russian site" - looks quite an informative site, what's the web address?

Thanks

With 99% of MBs you have to remove the rear box first and work forward, I think that you will find that one of the hair springs has come off of one side.

I have seen cars in showrooms where this compartment will not stay closed.

If you cant work it out how to get to it,let me know.

Did not you have this problem where the lid would not open and you had some important things in the box and I tried to help, that was about 5000 post ago for me.

I am looking at this drawing of the "housing with tray".
http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.434&CT=F&cat=515&SID=68&SGR=255&SGN=06

The piece I am talking of is not in this drawing but sits on top of the tray on the right-hand side of the drawing where the screw (item 23) and the clip (item 8) are shown. It covers the box immediately below.

At the front of this cover is a small pullable rectangular knob. I have seen that on other 129's of this vintage when you move the knob the whole of the top cover moves forwards or backwards and then locks into position to permit the left arm to rest more easily upon it. The knob moves but the top does not!

In the lower picture the sliding arm rest is number 98 and the knob 101 but I can see in your link that only one picture is shown

Go to http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1

then go to 129060 next go to 68 covering then 315 and you will get both pics up. this armrest is operated by pressing in the button 101 and sliding the top of arm rest 98

It wasn't me who had a problem getting into the box, so far as I can recall. No doubt you were able to help yet another twit like me!

My item 101 does not seem to have any pressure on it when I push or pull. Do you know if the spring [item 113] is linked to that mechanism? I am just wondering whether something is missing/broken.

The alternative is simply to open up item 98, pray that I do not lose the contents during that process and chack
