Drove to the local shop in my C180 auto last night.

Came out, started the car, drove off the carpark, about 20 yards to the traffic lights which were on red.

Stopped and sat with foot on brake. Ater being sat for about 20 seconds the tickover started to feel very lumpy - the lights changed, put my foot down and .......... nothing ...... the car crept forward and wouldny go any faster !!!! - got thru the lights with a lot of horn sounding behind me, pulled onto the kerb, blipped the throttle and everything seemed ok - pulled off and all ok - hasnt done it since

any ideas ???

Hi Chris
Had something similar in my wifes C180. I moved the car out of the garage and switched off the engine. Then half an hour later needed to move it again so that I could wash my SLK. Tried to start it...1, then 2, 3, eventually 4 cylinders lots of black smoke. Then it settled down. It has never done it since

It sounds like air in the fuel system. There is a valve somewhere, which should preserve pressure in the system. Also the fuel pump should prevent 'flow back' but its not so good at this, hence the valve. Now all you need to do is find the valve...

Could be your MAF on the way out. I had intermitent lumpy idling, odd and occasional power losses, part throttle hesitancy and strange gear changes over a period of 2-3months. Intermittent, though, so hard to pinpoint.

Thanks Angus - really didnt want to hear that one !!!!!!!

As always, cheapest option first - WD40 - Just realised that this was about an hour or so after washing the car.

Probably not related but will go over all electrics with the old WD40 before I do anything else
