Just wondering if one of the knowledgable guys can explain this.
Went to pick up my son from work yesterday. On the motorway I was toodling along blowing some cobwebs from the engine.
When a new BMW 4x4 (Don't know the model sorry)came up behind me.
Being the nice guy I am I pulled into the centre lane and he started to accelerate past me. When! It looked like all his brakes slammed on at once and I could see he wasn't expecting it as he was thrown forward. Lots of smoking tyres and him stuck in the outside lane. I didn't see any more as I had to keep going.
What on earth could have caused that ?

Gawd know unless he hit the brakes with his left foot. Was someone extremely close up behind him?

Nope, luckily it was pretty quiet.
My main worry is following one of them in the future, never seen anything like it.

Did he drop his mobile whilst lighting his fag and drinking his coffee?

X3 or X5 will be the model.

As the stopping distances are not that short on most 4x4's you should if your a 'safe' distance behind still be able to stop in time. Especially with BAS.

It looked as though his brakes just locked on, as his face was a picture as he was thrown forward. Didn't look as if the ABS was working as the wheels just froze.

He probably went for the non-existant clutch and put all his left foot effort on the brake pedal instead.
You will get skid marks even with ABS. The only difference is that it will be a row of short skid marks instead of a long one.
If you slam the brakes full on from 80 MPH, you will get smoking tyres with any car: BMW, Merc or any other fitted with ABS or not

I thought that BMWs had the opposite problem of the accelerator sticking down and the driver not being able to slow down.
