Does anyone know the purpose of this strange recess found in the lip of the boot lid on the SL? Some have suggested that it is there to accomodate your fingers in closing the lid. But, its position on the underside of the lip makes it counter-intuitive. I tried, using my hand, to draw the lid down quickly. But after the hand was withdrawn there was not enough downward motion to allow the self closing mechanism to kick in. A push on the upper surface of the lid was required.

Sadly at the moment we only have 2 people here with a R230, I should have one any day, and if I can remember I will have a look at mine.

It's probably something to do with drug smuggling.

The way that it is shaped would mean that it would be suited to closing when you are inside.

It is to close the boot - most cars have these now (my C Class estate certainly does, as do wife's Jazz and daughters Ibiza) although there's often a bit of an knack to using them. It really bugs me if someone else closes my boot and leaves finger marks in the muck on the tailgate!

It could be that the springing is wrong on the SL, or perhaps with self-closing it isn't meant to work, but MB have simply used a common piece of trim rather than having a special one for your car?

I have the same on my 211 and did have on my 210 - they all have them. It works fine on mine but I guess the springing and weight of the lid will alter how effective it is. There is a knack to it. It's just better than pushing down from the top where you run the risk of scratching the paintwork or denting the panel.

On my study of these cars, I have found out that the boot should be closed with two hands, as the lightweight boot panels twist.

Previous model Range Rover exactly the same, you should close with two hands to stop the top tailgat twisting.

The slk has it too to close the boot but the flick of the wrist to use it would break a lesser man or woman:D

On my SLK it is easier to use as there are 2 hand holds and the boot lid is not as stiff as on the SL.
I sprayed all of the moving joints with a PTFE lubricant and mine now almost closes under its own weight.
