Crankshaft sensor is the best bet if it does not fire up £48 from Bosch or £80 from MB easy to fit

It must be your lucky day to have broken down at the mechanic's garage, I usually manage it miles from any civilisation.:p

Yeah, but by the time I had gone back in to speak to him he was away home !!

Malcolm, thanks a million for that. I called up to see the auto spark armed with this info and he says that it sounds likely and his diagnostic machine should confirm it on Monday.

It never fails to amaze me how helpful people are here with info. Just makes me wish I had gone MB years ago instead of going to garages/mechanics without any clue what the problem was!!

Normally when some one has a breakdown I direct them to Margery Proops to help them recover :D:D

"Hi, I have broken down on the motorway"

AA receptionist - "Ok Sir, what happened?"

"I don't know, I just started crying...."

:( Auto spark's computer won't read the engine brain so he can't tell if it's the sensor. He has said I need to get it over to an MB dealership so they can do it. Can't tow it cos it's automatic

Wondering if MB charge for collecting and transit and then how much for labour if it is just the sensor ?????

Wow!! Think I might phone the AA and get them to bring me over! As for the sensor, I take it from what you are saying Malcolm that there is a charge for putting it on STAR and it might be better to just change it first and hope thats it?

Is this something to do with the starting problem or just advice as something that might go wrong, cheers.

Damn!! Mechanic changed the crankshaft sensor and made no difference. Old sensor was clean and still magnetic, no marks etc on it. He seems to think that the fuel must be cutting off for some reason:-(. Everything else seems ok ? He has someone coming tomorrow morning with a diagnostic machine so will wait and see......

Sorry it did not solve it, they normally do and is still the biggest reason for this fault.

Fuel is fairly easy and straight forward to check

No worries, as you said, better to check that first just in case. Will update when I get to the bottom of it.

Smart + others :)
Dont guess when buying parts unless there real cheap, check the injector connections, check for the correct fuel, they will run on a petrol mix but wont start. check for injector leak off. Those are easy ones to do without a star.

All injectors etc checked this morning and diagnostic check done. No faults registered. Now think it might be something to do with the immobiliser!!

Update - Car now in with Independent Mercedes specialist. He is replacing fuel seals (had rotted due to a leak in the fuel pump) and is replacing the pump. Reckons air was getting in and that why it wouldn't 'catch'. Fingers crossed......

That sounds plausible with a diesel

Does no one use Mobilio life?

Are you out of cover with mobilo life?

When mine stopped with similar probs. along came an MB tech plugged in the diagnostics and said he was autherised to do a hundred quid or so of repairs or tow me for free? Lucky for me it was the CSS.

Update - Car back on the road :D Had fuel seals replaced and a new high pressure fuel pump fitted. So far so good. Great independent mechanic and will post his details on the Independent thread for others in NI. Came highly recommended and well justified it seems.

nb. No Mobilo Life (didn't even know what it was until i googled it :-()
