I know this is a pretty dull question but i've no idea so here goes....

How would i know if my car has ABS brakes or not? It's a 1989 300SE Auto.

I've had a search about and to be honest, still have absolutely no idea.

We've all got to start somewhere i guess!

thanks

There are 2 ways to check, with the ignition on there will be a red light in the cluster saying ABS, when you start the car, this lamp should go out within X sec. the other way is to find a quiet piece of road, if its wet,all the better, get up to about 25 MPH and press the brake pedal hard, without taking your foot off the pedal, with ABS you will feel the pedal pulsing under you foot.

Another method would be to open the bonnet and look for a square aluminium block with lots of brake pipes going into it.

To check it this way, sinse the brake ABS pump uses the same size pipes as the injection pump, it could be hard.

You could count the pipes, there will be 5.

My 1988 300TE had ABS fitted as standard and very effective it was too. The unit is quite easy to spot under the bonnet in the bottom right hand corner with lots of brake pipes coming out from it, it also has a plastic cover with ABS stamped on it.

Pick a quite spot and try it out. I can remember the first time I used it in earnest, looking back I'm still impressed today.

Enjoy your 300, great car!
