thank you for your replies. The car seems to be driving well again now, strange, but am terrified it will go again.
There isnt a hissing noise at all, the car seems to be running perfectly, sounds fine when too. How weird! But many thanks again will keep an eye on things. cheers.

Hi Flamson1

I had similar problem a couple of times, each time it restarted. But Monday evening done same thing and had to be towed home at considerable cost. Been asking for any advice on forum this morning. Suggestions seem to be the auto fluid - getting husband to have a look tonight.
Will update you - mines a 230 Kompressor auto

Had the same problem on my C270cdi a few times. Took it to Prestige for a check up and Olly suggested change the ATF. No problems since he did it!

Just a thought. As you are driving your boyfriends car, perhaps you are not too familiar with it. I am unsure if it affects your model but I remember being confused with loss of power in my ML. Took me ages to find that I was using left foot braking in the traffic and just brushing the brake with my left foot was causing total power loss - normal of course. I just hadn't been aware of the way it worked. Haven't found that in any other car.

You should be aware that my GL is subject to a recall notice at the moment and the letter is headed "Sudden loss of power".

Apparently some problem with a crankshaft sensor.

Don't know if other models have the same issue.

C270cdi - Does this sound like the same problem

Hi,

This is my first post but I'm having a problem with my C270CDI that sounds similar to that described above. However, my dealer is suggesting a somewhat more expensive fix than changing the ATF. His view is that it is either the manifold or the manifold inlet port shut-off valve that is defective (I think the diagnostic computer sugested a possible fault here). Either is an expensive fix. Obviously I don't want to spend more than necessary so ideas here would be helpful.

The symptoms are that, at some point during most journeys, when I try to accelerate the car doesn't respond. If I back off the gas a little, very slow acceleration does take place. It doesn't affect the top speed I can reach but it just takes a long time to get there. I can't hear any strange or unusual sounds and oddly the symptoms don't normally kick in until after the car has warmed up a little. This lack of power can last the rest of the journey but likewise can go away for a while before coming back again.

Oh, in case it is related, the problem first occured while I was suffering from a worn injecter seal (diesel exhaust fumes in the cabin...nice!). The dealer has replaced all the seals.

Although only 6 years old the car has done almost 150k miles.

Any ideas appreciated.

cheers
alf

I have just started getting the same type of problem on My C270CDI, it a 2001, with 105K miles.
It has started suffering with noticeable power loss.
Like you described, I can sit at whatever speed I like, but it just takes ages getting there. I suspected blown turbo hose, cracked intercooler, blocked intake. Check them all when I had the problem on Monday, all were OK.
I on my trip to and from work today, I gave it hell trying to make it fail, and it just drove like a rocket, no faults.
I had the ATF changed by MB dealers about 100k miles, so I don’t think it would be that. As I suspect this will fail again so ill get some Diagnostics tomorrow, and I’ll report back once I know more.

I'm thinking this sounds more like a low boost vacuum pressure which will be caused by a vac leak in one of the following components to the vac boost system...

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...647716.651&CT=F&cat=69V&SID=80&SGR=010&SGN=01

.. or failure of sensors 10 or 15.

If either of these detect low vacuum, then they put the vehicle into limp home mode (revs limited to 3000rpm).

Vac circuit shown for the 220cdi, 270 similar.

Thanks for the suggestion Malcom & Blakey, sorry to waste your time I had simply missed the obvious, Hose on intercooler came slightly adrift on the lower clip.

Tech took the car for a spin, did the fault codes, played with a few test screen. The Tech thought it was sure it was a leak in the boost lines. He Suspected that the intercooler had failed as there was oil around the area. Once the belly pan was dropped and inspected, it was obvious that the hose had come away (only slightly).
He explained briefly that the ECU would have sensed an imbalance of pressures, and triggered a safe mode.
All sorted now. They only charged me £20 all in.
To think, a crooked garage would have done me for an intercooler.
A Truly Excellent indi.
