Suggestions on buying new Mercedes

I am a Mercedes Benz lover, have owned a 86' 250 turbo diesel for many years, extremely satisfied, but am currently thinking on switching to a new ride, also because the car seems to have gotten tired, and it's getting a little expensive on repairs.
Persistent to stay within the MB world, would be interested in something classy, year of production 1996 and after, not too heavy for my pocket, diesel and fuel economic (these last two would be important factors of choice). Was thinking of a c220 or an elegance, but I am not much of an expert in this field. What would you suggest to me?

You need to give us some idea - is an E class too big, do you like the size of the C etc. Also, what's your budget?
The cars have changed a lot over the last few years some for good, some for bad. Also the era is important as quality slipped for a while.

There are good deals to be had on the E Class at the mo ... that is if you don't mind them insulting you with their trade in value of your car :-x
