My 1998 E300TD sunroof has a problem, it still tilts fine but when I try to slide it back, it moves for about 1" and then a loud clunk is heard and the sunroof jams solid and a loud mechanical banging noise eminates from the sunroof. It appears to slew to one side as well. It will close again normally. The emergency manual alen key will not wind the roof back either.

I have tried to see how the sunroof comes out (its a glass panel) but it seems to be a magic trick required because there are no obvious latches or screws visible. The main dealer has suggested that I live with the problem since they say that the repair is specialist and not financially viable. I believe that the truth is that they really don't have a clue how to fix it either..

Has anybody else had that same problem and can offer advice? I have looked for a workshop manual but without success.

Cheers,

Steve

sunroof problems

Hi Steve, my 1994 C180 also has this same problem lately. 2 years ago it was very slow moving and won't tilt. I took it to the stealers and they charged me a lot for just greasing it. It still moved slowly, but tilted so I got a brand new battery and all was fixed. Now, its slow moving again and seemed like all the grease has evaporated or been washed away! Just lumps of dirt and stuff. It is hard to tilt, but does when I push from under first, then it will tilt after, no more problems. When I open, the right corner moves first at an angle(above driver's head) and the left corner follows at about 1 inch behind. That noise you mentioned was heard also, but I panicked in case the whole shebang pops out, so I stopped it. When closed, it levels back and closes to normal shut situation. I also noticed that the rubber edging which is crimped? overlapping? on the left has jumped the glass edge and had to keep reinserting it back after each opening. One rubber grommet attached to the back of this rubber strip has popped out of the aluminium rail and won't get back in. Will try some oil to ease its re-entry. Cheers and tell me more about yours. Price quoted by stealers A$2000 to open up from inside, replace parts and labour. :? :x

My e class does this too. One day I will get round to fixing it and I am interested in any pointers. Did you get it fixed?

The same thing happened to my 300TD. My local mechanic asked me for a diagram of the sunroof mechs which i got from this site. He then fixed it. The cables get jammed up and you will not fix it with grease etc. the cables need replacing. They go down the rear door pillar i believe to the motor.
Whole job cost me less than £200.

My 1999 E 300 sunroof switch does not work at times - opens but won't close so I have to do it manually with the allan key. Do I need a new switch or someone mentioned programming with the windows?
