I wouldn't worry about Mercedes prices but I would take the car to a sunroof specialist.

These roofs are not really DIY fixable and it's very easy to do a lot of very expensive and even harder to fix damage than if you leave it to the experts in the first place.

W124 roof - I may well have the answer...

Ah yes, the W124 roof. Horrible ****** things...

Fortunately for you, I may well have the answer. Does the roof tilt up and sit flat it you play with the tilt mechanism? You get the tilt by pushing the sunroof switch up & down rather than forward & back

I have to issue a disclaimer here and say that if this procedure screws it up it's not my fault! If your roof grinds to a halt, sticks halfway, goes back but not forward or starts to tilt but then starts creaking, don't fool with it. Just start saving..

But, if it's mechanically OK - ie it tilts & slides okay and moves freely - but just doesn't park right, do this:

You don't say if it's a saloon or an estate. Either way, somewhere in the back is the motor assembly. On an estate it's behind the rear seat on the passenger side, in front of the spare wheel

On the motor assembly is a white knurled knob that sets the endstop of the motor travel. It engages with the cable that moves the roof

Park the roof by running it all the way forward with the front/back switch (hold the switch forward till the roof stops moving), then run it back a couple of inches. Pull the knurled knob towards you to disengage it (it'll be very stiff). Move the roof __just a little__ with the front-back switch, and remember which way you moved it, forward or back. Push the white knob back in. Now run the roof back a bit then "park" it again

Is it better or worse? If it's better, do the same again till you find the right park place. If it's worse, pull out the knob, move the roof __just a little__, and then a little more, with the front-back switch but in the opposite way to last time (you do remember, don't you?). Then push the knob back & test again

You'll get the logic after a few tries & getting it horribly wrong. Basically your roof is parking too far back and you need to set the end stop further forward so the motor pushes it further

If you get the setting completely wrong the front-back switch will make it tilt & slide as well, so anyone with this problem now knows how to fix it!

Oh yes, if anyone ever comes across a Mercedes sunroof expert, ie someone willing to repair or replace the buggers for less than £1000, please put them in contact with me!

Hi nick

It dose not move anywhere.i can hear the motor running and some noise at the back of the sunroof.above my head.some one said it,s the wire gone
or its come off the worm.whotever that means.this is when i use the sunroof switch. and now when i lock my car useing the remote button.as you know if you keep you finger on the button.it closes.the windows and the sunroof.
when i do that all i hear is the motor in the boot..that was when the problem started.useing the remote to shut the sunroof.all it was . the sunroof.had fell in at he back of the hole with an inch gap showing.and it was stuck there
it would not move.i hope you can understand that.i was trying close it by the
cranking gear in the boot.but it started to slide back.and go in the full open position. so i stopped.and i had to push it back by hand.so all i did was get in the car and pushed up and put it back in position.but it was not easy to push up.i dont think i have done any damage.i never heard anything.
well nick.i would like to thank you for your concern and you help
all the best mate.regards john

W124 sunroof

John

OK, unfortunately it sounds like you've got real problems with the roof. They're not easy things to fix and there's lots of labour involved. If you can get it shut completely you might be well advised to remove the sunroof switch so you can't activate it accidently and just live with it being closed
