Hi Folks,
In a previous thread, it was suggested that more modern MB wheels could be fitted to older Merc's and there were plenty always on offer on e-bay. I had a look and was suprised by the quantity for sale! (I haven't considered e-bay before).

My question is this:- My '93 124 is fitted with 15" wheels as standard but a lot of the more recent models (e.g.C & E class) seem to have 16" wheels.
I know that I would need to keep the rolling radius the same by changing tyres and I also know to take care with the offset and wheel width. What I don't know is if the pcd and bolt diameter for modern wheels would be OK for any earlier model like mine. This kind of info. doesn't seem to included in the descriptions on e-bay. I suspect that most sellers wouldn't know what these dimensions are anyway, so I would run the risk of buying something that didn't fit.
Does anyone know which models had wheels that would be OK or would it be easier to say which models to avoid? Or is it just not possible to say one way or the other.

Thanks

David

Steve,
Unless I've missed something, I can't see anything regarding pcd or wheel bolt diameters.

You can work out tyre sizes here

16" tyres are not as common as 15s and 17s and I think 16s will get more expensive over time

There's a 16" 8-hole alloy that Andy_K uses & recommends - do a search and you'll find his posts

In some ways I think tyre construction & sidewall stiffness play more of a part in the comfort (or lack of) of tyres on a W124. I've (briefly) driven cars with 16s and 17s and not noticed any immediate huge deterioration of ride quality. But I've driven W124s on Goodyears and Pirellis (at length) and, with some setups, hated every second of it

All the proper Mercs are 5 x 112 PCD and most are 12mm bolts. Exceptions are ML, S and W/S211 E class which use 14mm bolts.

RAD Gmbh http://www.radgmbh.com/eng_start.html can supply 12mm threaded bolts with a 14mm ball seat to allow wheels designed for 14mm bolts to be correctly mounted onto 12mm threaded hubs. RAD bolts have the correct temper and anti-rust coating etc.
