All

recently taken a 1998 C180 into stock, scruffy old thing with 137k on the clock, owner told me the head gasket was on the way out and quoted about £750 to replace it.
Anyway, the car has a misfire, compression test shows 200psi on three cylinders and 100 on another, there’s no water or oil issues, the side of the engine is damp with oil and there seems to be a lot of oil in the under tray.
I suspect the gasket is leaking and pushing oil out, so I’m in the process of removing the head.
All bolts are removed and the head is ready to lift but on the right side of the engine where the timing chain guide is there is an Allen bolt behind the nylon guide, my question is how do I remove the bolt?, I see on the outer casing the steel pin with a thread in it but I don’t understand how to move it to gain access to the allen bolt. Any help greatly appreciated.
Another question if I may, does anyone know the timing setup when the rebuild starts I’ve done the basics by marking where everything was but I want to follow a procedure also if possible.

many thanks

Hello Jib, Haven't done the job myself but the manual says:
"Pull the guide rail pin from the front of the cylinder head. M-B technicians use a slide hammer tool which is screwed into the pin. However a universal slide hammer and bolt can be used, or alternatively it may be possible to make up a removal tool using a long bolt, nut, large washers and metal tube. Locate the metal tube over the guide rail pin, and fit the nut to the bolt followed by the washers. Screw the bolt into the pin through the tube, then tighten the nut against the washers to extract the pin. (N.B. If the pin has not been removed for some time, it can be very tight.)"

many thanks for that, I thought it must be a press fit, I will have a try at making a slide hammer today.
Sorry to be a pain but does the manual have any info about setting up the cams and chain.

I know that Ron has sent you some info, in the MB manual they say that it is fine to use cable ties to tie the chain to the cam wheel.
