Not necessarily, check the basics first, fuse ok, 2 pin plug on back of unit connected ok, one pin should be live via ignition, (black/red I think) other is signal (green/yellow) I forget where the signal is produced in your diesel, likely the engine ecu, but it terminates at the single screw immediately next to the 9 pin diagnostic socket (the one with the screwtop) check this is tight.
I still have a defective (intermittent) tacho on my 1988 W124 300D, despite trying to follow up suggestions in an earlier thread. I have seen the diagnostic socket mentioned but have never been able to find it - can anyone help, please? Thanks.
