tailgate not opening inside or out - help please ?

I have a 2003 E class estate & I cannot get the tailgate to open - any advise or hints welcome, please

Have you tried the metal emergency key in the lock?
They normally seize up due to lack of use. Get some lubricant in the lock and work the key back and forth

Look up underneath by the release handle. Small chrome circle with a slot for the key. Might be a bit dirty.
