Talk to me about 7G-Tronic boxes

One for the techies really. I have been putting off the moment, but it now draws ever nearer. I don't have the kit to change trans fluid in 7G gearboxes, and its about time I did. My favourite Merc authorised repairer has told me that they made their own machine up from some part they had to buy, and a hand pump or some such. Certainly a lot cheaper than the official trolley affair.

Anyone have any links or useful information???

So smooth and yet prone to fail, both CLS 350 7g I know of, both less than 20k and both had failed boxes.

I think you must of been very lucky with your experiences, on the whole I have seen very very few failures, a few jurky boxes for sure, but not many failures. As Malcolm sats the latest software is a great deal better.

Completly agree with you there jib!!

I went out to a chap today who i saw a couple of years ago, then the fault codes were ETC control unit fault, seeing him again today he told me they replaced the box!!!!

Yer and Mercedes wont give any paperwork out either to state the gearbox has been replaced either.

Both cars I know about where bought by 2 brothers, identical cars and the mileage on one 16k the other 12k. Both now have new gearboxes, Mercedes where producing new software on a monthly basis at one point.

Nice cars, I see robinsons in cambridge are selling a 2 year old CLS55 £75 new 19k on the clock £32k Im tempted, just need to convince the wife two new bathrooms and a holiday for the 4 years arnt necessary.

The electro hydraulic control unit on my 7G (C230) failed just before the warranty expired. Software has also been upgraded a few times since new. Clunky down changes downhill. New s/w and clunky downchanges uphill. Seems OK at the moment although now out of warranty. It's a bit of a concern what will happen long term.

BTW - the failure was around 47K miles.

a lot of the problem is people don't take the car out and reset the fill times for the up/down shifts, did this on my first R and never looked back!!!!

Funny that, some mercedes autos seem to fail at 50k!!!

Not sure what you mean by fill times but you would think the dealers know what they are doing. The last time the vehicle was in it was kept in overnight so they could check the level cold the follow morning, They did say it's a real pain with these boxes to change the fluid and get the level right.

Thats a hard one,,I can have what I like and go where I like, but I do not know what I want or where to go,I could not go back to just saying "yes dear"
