I replaced the batteryon my ML this week (W164). It's my own fault - I SORN'd it in March as I wasn't going to be using it again for a while, and neglected it to the point of the battery being stone dead. I pulled it out to charge it, but to no avail. New one fitted now, and all fine, but whilst in the compartment (under drivers seat), I noticed a small additional battery. What does it do?? No SBC on this model. Would never start the car - about 4 inch cube.

Yes!

Its for that very thing,

The funny thing is, it has never worked for me,

Every 164 i have been out to for a dead battery or stuck in park, the only way to get them out of park is via star!!

Oh, and a jump pack!!

Yes I have just been reading up on it,,the chances are that the DC/AC inverter packs up and the little one does not get charged

Interesting! For what purpose?? To get it out of park if battery dead??

On the right train of thought but the wrong direction:(
It's to put the box INTO park if the main battery fails - pain in the arse but typical of Mercs safety ideas;)

seems a godd place to tag this on, anyone know causes of non starting on the 164? this is a late 2006 320 cdi 164, it will occasionaly not start, but will respond to a boost pack every time. this will somtimes happen in jsut 3hrs. MB replaced battery and alternator last year. i wondered if anyone of the MB mechanics on here have any previous of excessive quiescent draws on these?? it is in on thursday so i thought i would ask here before i get involved. oh also, it will be fine for weeks then play up suddenly.

Under the jumping point is a row of strip fuses, seen a 164 without a 10mm nut on one end of the fuse, hence, jump start ok!

Worth a looky!!
