Hi All,

My favourite little Y2K CLK 320 with about 80k miles has developed tappet noise of late. When it began it was just on start up, but the noise is more continuous now. I've changed oil regularly at 6mth or 5k miles with Mobil 1 0-40 synth, and have repeated recently. Car runs well otherwise.

Any advice welcome ... do the hydraulic lifters need replacing regulary? Are they home workshop possible - or best left to professionals (anyone done it?).

Thanks,
David.

Could be the lifters but they tend to go quiet once full with oil and warm etc, could be chain getting a little slack or the chain tensioner, I could be the exhaust manifold gasket giving up they can sometimes sound like a mechanical rattle or knock, look around the manifold for black soot on the cylinder head if so then gasket needs changing.

If your still not sure find a good indie and have them take a look, chains and tensioners are not really for the average DIY and done incorrectly can result in massive expense and or damage.
