Please can any one advise me on a course of action regarding my 87sel500.
When starting (especially in hot weather)i hear the tappets (loudly)then after a min or so she goes nice and quiet then sometimes the tappet noise comes back.I will change the oil as its about that time but is an oil injector faulty?also is it a job i can do myself as i am reasonably able?
any advice would be welcome...thanks Chris.

Fully synthetic oil might well clear crud which could be afecting flow into the area - potential downside is you may make any existing oil leaks worse.

Good idea to try the oil first before any rebuild as it may not be necessary.

are you sure it's a tappet noise? could be a worn cam chain - they sometimes rattle for a minute or two then quieten...

The noise is usually the oil pressure taking time to build up in the tappets. I don't think it does much harm at start up but if it's happening while driving that is a bit more serious.

What oil are you currently using?

If you are using a modern oil, then you will probably get this problem.

Usually a good hard run clears the tappets, replacement may be neccessary if they get really bad.

Remember, streethawk, to an engineer the glass is twice the size it needs to be!
