My 190e 1.8 has been tapping for quite some time so my mechanic mate is flushing the engine today in hope of retifying the problem.

However it may well be that we need to sort the tappets out....we'v looked at the haynes manual and it dosnt really tell us if they are shimmed or hydrolic.

Also if we do have to start faffing with the tappets does anyone have any clear instructions on how to get at them and sort the noise out....the manual once again seems to be clear as mud.

I really dont want my car tapping anymore!!!!

any help most appreciated!

could be a hydraulic tappet fault or the failure of a cam lobe. a tappet noise is a loud clacking while a cam noise is not so loud and less harsh. if its the latter... don't drive the car as it is very common for the squared off cam lobe to cause a valve to fail and drop. remove crocker cover to inspect.

Hi mate it is more than likely the tappets,
Take the rocker cover off and inspect the cam for groove's if that looks okay, change the hydraulic tappets, about £40 for a full set at ECP,its easy to do, just do one set of rockers at a time ,[so you dont mix them up] the tappits just push out then insert the new one, after priming it with oil,
