Just been advised by gearbox specialist the sump is full of debris and the TC the likely culprit, gearbox fried and £2300 to get box refurbed and new TC...could I ask for thoughts on what could have caused this? I had cranks seals replaced and oil cooler seals done a month ago and a water pump and belt replaced 3 weeks ago, could like work be related to this catastrophic failure? Thanks

Smart + others :)
Was the rear main oil seal replaced? If so was the tc fitted correctly? Having said that, I doubt it would have driven.

Yes is was both the crank seal and oil coolers...it did drive but was revving high before changing gear, took it back to mechanic who said he had not connected something correctly, throttle switch?, which he rectified and it drove really well for about 2 weeks until this situation happened after she drove me 500 miles? maybe its got too much power or has been chipped/mapped? need to get to the bottom of it, but will be hard to pin it on one thing I feel. Cheers

Ask the company that’s checking the box to provide you with an engineers report of the failure, that will point to the root cause and then give you an indication of if the other work may have been a contributing factor

7G box? what mileage, how often was trans oil changed. If its been done every 40k miles or less its unfortunate …. if its at 120k and no record it was ever changed its what you should expect.

they do fall to bits, its quite common, and the TC on a Merc seems to die very often

Some TCS are common for exploding internally, you could just be unlucky!

Doing a few 7Gs now for TC failure or the valve bodies failing and jamming the lock up valves writing off the transmissions. MLs are a favourite.
Could this be one if the reasons that the 722.6 trans are considered more reliable?
