Teething Problems

I have recently purchased a 230E 1992 (K plate) and have a few teething problems which i hope you can help me with.
If i do not use the car over the weekend the battery goes flat, battery is new, i had the car checked and was told that the alternator charge was weak but i dont see how that drains the battery. I have a second hand alternator being delivered and i will try it. That still leaves the problem of the battery draining. I checked with a multimeter and with everything off the battery shows about 0.3 amps draw - i pulled fuses and the only one that made a difference was the one for the clock - any ideas

I have a problem with the drivers central locking - the car has a remote control but when i press unlock all it does is sets off the alarm. if i leave the car unlocked and pull the fuse from the central locking pump then the drivers door activates the central locking but still does not work on remote

I was driving with the sunroof open last week and the sun-roof closed itself. i opened it again but as soon as i let the switch go it closed. this happened numerous times so i left it shut. Then it decided to go into the tilt mode - which was strange because i had no idea it tilted. Finally after a mess about i got it shut and disconnected the switch plug. I have ordered a new switch but have no confidence that this will fix it. When i am driving i am sure i can hear a relay clicking in the roof lining - this is with the plug off. Is there another system that automatically closes the roof?

I would appreciate any help

Hi Mick,

Welcome to the forum. Pretty busy at the moment, but will get back later.

PS: Thread moved to electrics, as you should get better feedback

the sunroof on modern models can do some strange 'helpful' things.

As well as closing using the remote control "convenience closing" feature, it can close on rain, close after 12 hours, open to tilt (clue?) in extreme heat.

Sunroof may be operating ok but being given misleading signals.

Good luck.

Two wires go from the drivers/passengers door locks to the central control vacuum pump.

These two wires are where the alarm is connected to the central locking.

The auto window/sunroof closing/opening funtion is known as 'comfort setting' and is activated by holding down the fob button or turning the key in the door beyond the locking position and holding.

I don't have a wiring diagram, but I think there is a resistor(s)/capicitor(s) in the door on these wires. I think I have heard of a faulty resistor causing battery drain some months ago on this forum. Here it is: http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=10160&highlight=resistor

Regarding your sunroof...may not be connected to above....self closing.... unusual to say the least, as comfort circuitry is inoperable with engine running. If there was an inadvertant activation of the comfort circuit, the windows would shut along with the sunroof.

Try this first:
But it is possible that the sunroof needs to be reset (to be taught) after a power interuption. Press button to the totally open position(slide) and hold button for several seconds after opened. Close sunroof (slide) and hold button for several seconds after closed. Do the same for tilt(I think) open and close.

battery going flat - I had same problem & found that switch for rear interior light had become faulty - short circuit - @ the same time as the rear bulb had failed.
stripped switch down & re-assembled which cleared short circuit until new switch obtained.

I had a battery draining problem, it was the central locking pump that caused it.

I haven't really got it sorted yet, but I think that the divers side lock is the problem.

I have replaced the sunroof switch and nothing moves at all - i have taken the plug off incase it decides to open itself when it is raining. I am sure on engine start that i can hear a rewlay clicking in the roof lining.
Regarding the battery drain i found that one of the wires to the boot light was off - it could be that this was causing an earth - i have reconnected it and the boot light now works - why wouldn't it blow the fuse if it was shorting to earth?

Sunroof

I am having problems with the electric sunroof on my W124. Problem first showed itself when the sunroof powered itself shut whilst open, after reopening it it immediately powered shut, then went into tilt and would not move. I removed the plug from the swith and used a shorting lead to close the roof. i bought a new switch but now the roof will not move at all - i can here the motor try to run on each switch selection but it appears that there is a relay locking it closed. If i short the connections in the plug with a shorting lead and then reconnect the plug to the switch it will allow me to operate the roof through 1 full cycle but then it wont move again. Does anyone know if there is a locking relay in the system - my wiring diagram doesn't show the sunroof

Hi Mick

I dont have a wiring diagram either. I presume you dublicated the wiring of the new switch with the old.
So after that it seems it could only be a sticking relay. It seems when you start your car this relay is 'kicking in' in an attempt to close your already closed sunroof. I think the relay in question is in the boot, but as you say you can hear it, you should be able to find it.

Pascal

PS I merged the two threads, as you will usually get better feedback when the whole story is presented.

sunroof

latest update on the wretched sunroof
On the motor assembly in the boot is a knurled white plastic knob. The knob was pushed right in and the sunroof would not operate. I pulled the knob out and rotated it slowly and can here contacts clicking - the sunroof moves all the way back and with a further rotation all the way forward. Now i can open the sunroof by pushing the roof switch to the rear and close it by selecting tilt up but stopping short of the full operation. the tilt close and forward positions on the switch do nothing. Has anyone else ever messed with the motor?
