I read a lot of articles on telematics. I hear there are a lot of features being planned. For example, I think it'd be cool to have my car send me or my dealer an alert if my tire pressure was going low or my battery was going dead. It would also be cool if my car could conduct a self-diagnosis, contact my dealer for an appointment and send diagnostics information. Is any of this technically posible? Do other MB owners think this would be cool? What other cool features would you like on your cars?

I have never heard it called telematics but there you go - you learn something everyday.

I believe Haulage operators have something similar and the American military too for their trucks. Of course the slick merchant fleet operators have been doing something very similar for 20 years in ships.

For the private punter - I am sure it will come. However, who stands to gain and who pays? I am sure it will be a great source of revenue for the dealer. Personally - no thanks.

Cool features - well when the kids were young I used to dream of a double glazed partition between me and the rear seats - coz they used to fight like hell when we were on a long haul. Have recently bought a portable DVD player for use in the car (Rear!) - sheesh I wish they had been around 10 years ago!! If my car were a lot younger the cool feature of my choice would be an integrated entertainment system with DVD capability.

Ho Hum!

I think the new Ferrari's have this....they have now have a direct communication to Maranello's using simple GSM which regularly sends data about the car to the factory , which in turn updates the local dealer who in turn contact the customer.

Bit big brother though in my opinion...and in future, I think all cars could adopt a similar calling home system. This kind of technology could potentially be used against the humble motorist so although in principle I like the idea, I reserve judgement until case law dictates how this kind of information could be used.

I think that the new BMW 7-series has this feature and of-course the Maclaren F1, but in this one, they can also re-tune your engine on the go.
