Hi guys....it's the Newbie (Steve) here again....lol.

Please forgive me if I am hijacking a thread, but the subject is relevant and I thought would sit right here rather than open a new one).......

.....right then........

In the W210, I have an Eonon e303 Head Unit. It has plugs ready for DVB-T.

I see them advertised on e-bay, and really fancy one. Any recommendations/experiences gang?

The biggest issue will be the antenna. What do peeps in my position (no Command etc) use to pull in a good (up to 70mph) signal, in a decent reception area. I see certain ones on e-bay proporting to offer up to 96db gain!

I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions.

Thanx in advance, as all repliers to my various 'Newbie posts' here have been so helpful.

Cheers,
Steve

Re the antenna's have a look on ebay to see if the are still selling the 2 way split amps, you can then just tap into that using the existing antenna network, all of those on Ebay work quite well as do the 12volt domestic home versions

This is the unit that Cliff, Television and I have gone for and it works very well. They were selling them on ebay recently, but email them and ask what their best price is incl shipping to the uk. http://www.sinoitproducts.com/products/Dvbt/T300.htm

They fit just about anywhere and come with a dinky little remote.

It's that time again !

Now that most things are sorted on the C32 it's time to install a new DVB tuner.

Could I trouble you Malcolm for the W203 centre console removal instructions ?

I take it I'll be running the live from the switched live on the cigar lighter again rather than the 12v supply in the boot ?

Will let you know how I get on !

Cheers

I have sent it to you.

Yes it does require a switched key 1 live so the cigar lighter is the only place

DVB TV installation

Hi Television (Malcolm)
I am a newbie to this site. However I'm a senior (technical) member on an equivalent USA site albeit that I have been dormant for a year or so.
I have a w215 with 2.5 Comand that I am in the process of fitting DVB, since our analogue signal has just been turned off (Wrekin / Sutton Coldfield Midlands area)
I am using a Bush 12v DVB which was installed without any difficulties and gives an excellent picture when stationary.
However picture quality on the move is unwatchable (sp?)so my issue is all about aerial spec.
Now I have tried a number of different "on screen" aerials with amps 5v and 12v and also an omni directional external mag mount, but in my area the signal is just not good enough. Best signal strength stationary to date is 80% according to the OSD.
I'm surprised by a screen shot somewhere on this thread showing a signal strength of only 43%. That wouldn't even give me a picture!

So my question to you is do you get acceptable reception on the move?
If so what area do you operate in (SW?), what aerial are you using? (the MB aerial is a 4 channel diversity so surely using only one channel will give poor results dependent upon orientation).

I've also tried a CK-O diversity tuner which gave marginally better results than my Bush single channel but certainly not worth £300 vs £30 (Cost of my existing installation including IMHO best aerial to date = Funke ADSC470).

Any sharing of your experience would be gratefully received.
Regards,
Stuart

I think in some area's the signal strenght is good and other poor, mainly due to the lie of the land. The higher the band and the more the signals go in a straight line. In the old days with Band 1, this signal would go up the wall of a house and down the other side. UHF signals only work very good with a line of sight to the transmitter. Digital TV on the move is useless where I live due to all of the hills and mounds, in say Cambridgeshire it works quite well.

Your installation did you have an analogue TV in the car ??

Are you using or have you tried using the in built antenna.

If using a so called car antenna then they are next to useless without an amp, for they use 50 ohm coax and without an amp the signal does not want to travel down it, so the signal will be too weak for anything usable.

Where I live we all have amps in the houses, and the same is required for the car.

If you had a tuner previously then try the inbuilt antenna, if using a bought in antenna get an amp for it,,it can make all the difference

Thanks for the response.

Yes I had analogue up to the point of switch off which worked very well. Picture faded in weak signal areas but was entirely watchable.

I can see the Wrekin direct line of sight but this only gives a signal (vehicle static and facing transmitter) strength reading of 80%

I tried the in car analogue aerial but got no results (maybe my connection without removing the 4 channel plug was less than perfect) so concluded that the design was not compatible for the required frequency band. I will try this route again but I'm dubious since the MB in-car is a 4 channel diversity. Using only one channel will surely result in poor performance.

The Funke aerial amp that I am currently using claims to be 16dB (5v supply) but isn't omni directional. Other aerials with amps claiming up to 96dB gave no better results.

The 4 antenna outputs from the inbuilt car amp is fine, I have used the two from the end in where this plug goes into the tuner, and I believe they are all the same, you must join the inner wire carefully and the screen to a sort lead with a standard coax or F connector what ever the tuner uses.

There is little difference in the signal strenght of any Digi tuner.

As an example of how signals will not travel through 50 ohm coax, in my home I have used 50 ohm cables for 2 rooms as the 75ohm was too fat, you can get nothing from them without an amp.

Nothing wrong with the amp in the car as digi is on the same frequency as the old system so perfect
