I've just fitted a new thermostat to mine as I mine never got over 60 degrees and was smoking badly, she now goes up to 95 and is much better. It does seem to take about 5 or 6 miles to warm up fully though this time of year

Try using a specific diesel injector cleaner and run it through at double the recommended dosage. Alflock make an industrial diesel injector cleaner.

Black smoke on acceleration, could possibly be the EGR valve siezed... it can be removed and brought back to life again again .. its located on the passenger side of the engine just behind and below the inlet manifold.. shout if u need more help to check it

Unlikely the MAF - you'd get qute rough running, particularly under load.
After the EGR valve I would look to blocked or worn injectors. Is your car a W210 as per picture?

time to warm up

in the recent winter months, about 15 mins to warm up in flowing city traffic. Now, with the warmer weather, about 10 mins. Ours didn't get above 60 before we changed the stat. I can't beleive they made you wait 5 weeks. The longest it should ever be is 3 days, even if it's coming straight from stuttgart.

The EGR valve activating solenoid is held on by 3 torx screws, slightly fiddly to get at but relatively simple to remove and clean, there is a vacuum connection on the underside..two pipes, remove the pipes and the 3 screws, u will need an extension or torx srewdriver to make life handier, when u have removed the EGR valve solenoid u should be able to feel the actual opening and closing disc within the manifold, try pressing on this disc, it should move fairly easily, if it doesnt it is seized, spray copious amounts of wd40, TS10, or any relevant freeing oil in and around the valve, let it sit for ten minutes and again attempt to move it, continue spraying and checking until it moves, replace the actuating solenoid and hey presto clouds of smoke and then heavenly bliss, a rear view without the dreaded smoke.... you can check the operation of the solenoid/valve by connecting up the pipes and starting the engine.. the centre piston rod will move out and in as u rev the engine.. if help is not available just connect and disconnet a pipe and the valve will work.... again inlet manifold behind the fuel filter.. look for a round aluminium filter shaped object.. it sits just below the level of the manifold ....
