Gone! Displays garbled. Very annoying I 'd rather the clock going wrong than the temperature gauge. Impossible to read the temperature because segments are missing from the LCD, they come and go.

It is in the integrated dashboard - I do not know what's wrong with it, it may be bad contacts on the LCD or a cable loose. Is there a way to pull it all out and rejiggle the wires or is it "best to buy a new car" scenario?

I do not dread to take it to MB they will probably charge the price of a small car just to have a look at it.

Any help appreciated.

One of many I'm affraid. MB will only replace the whole unit ~£600.
However they are on ebay, but do they worK?
Alternatively you could get it refurbished but I've not seen a supplier.
When JBerks sees this thread he may be able to point you in the right direction for a repair

My favourite subject it seems!
Don't worry, if your temp guage has gone, the clock won't be too far behind it!

Yes, they are £600+ new from MB, and thats the only thing the dealer or MB cust services will offer, so thats a non starter. I stripped mine down a couple of times but never manager to make a difference. Allegedly, its a poor connection and can be fixed (see http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1223038&posts=15&fid=17) but their description didn't match mine and results are mixed, so I can't be sure.

Also, allegedly, www.bba-reman.com repair them. However, having trawled their website I can't see any reference, but I am pretty sure they have mentioned it in the past so possibly worth a call.

I tried the breakers and various repairers and never found anyone to help. I did find a chap who offered to have a look, but sold the car before taking up the offer.

They can come up on ebay but its hit and miss and you could end up with the same problem a month later. There is actually one on there now
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mercedes-benz...632733195QQcategoryZ10398QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem that would probably fit the bill.

Hmm, just been to that site, scary how easy is to change the mileage counter! Which makes me think, my car which I bought second hand with 24000 miles could well have 48000 miles...

Unfortunately the current EBAY cluster does not suit me it is for a diesel mine 's petrol.

But the thread on
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1223038&posts=15&fid=17

is highly illuminating! I am now convinced it is dodgy contacts.

I will buy the cluster removal tools from ebay now.

Many thanks all

Good luck with the fix - I got nowhere with mine, but you never know.
Also, don't bother with the tools - push it out from behind - just as easy and less risk of a broken glass.

Awww... I just bought the tools. I thought I ran the risk of breaking something if I tried to get it out without the right tools. I thought the tools unlock hidden clips/latches...

What do you mean "push it out from behind" ? Stick my hand under the dashboard and push? Is it secured with clips of any description or just friction?

Take the covers off under the dash, this will enable you to put your hand up and push the unit out from behind. They can be very tight, they tend to stick, but a good push from both sides, and it will come. there are one or two multi plugs on the rear, these just unclip, and its out. There are no clips, just a very tight fit, incorrect use of the special tool, you can break the glass.

Knowing what I know now, a couple of year's ago I might have started doing something like this, but I cant work forever, there is no point.

Just for General info, when checking the price of a new cluster, the dealer asked me if I just needed the glass. Apparently, MB do supply the front covers for around £50 if anyone comes to grief.

Anyway - for stripping it, this may be useful

Good luck.
