I'm getting terrible medium wave radio reception, which is a pain when radio scotland puts out its sport on medium wave and i want to listen to it! I'm thinking the MW aerial is internal, and probably tricky to fix.

My current unit is a merc tape deck, with the changer in the boot. Looking on ebay folk seem to frequently "dump" their old tape decks when they upgrade, so might just get one of those on the cheap, but it occured to me that there might be a better option.

Do any of the 2 unit tall units work on a W163 (not comand sat nav!) and if so, which ones, otherwise i'll try and get a direct replacement.

The FM is perfect ... that's why its just a minor gripe. I don't know what you mean by "the front end gone down on the radio"

(Thanks for the quick reply!)

On Radio's the FM and AM are on separate circuits, the front end is a single transistor that boost the signal, thew AM one could be faulty.

The antenna is built into the glass. do you have another car that you could listen to the AM to see what its like in your area, though we are at the time of the year where AM propagation is at its best

I see from the number of posts, Tontastic is about to become a senior member.

Give Radio Scotland a call and ask them to 'turn the wick up a bit' !!

Ah, got you ... yes the wife's car has decent MW reception, although i will pop out later and check again to be sure.

Sounds like it will be easier to just replace it then, seeing as they are so cheap ...

Cheers guys, have added a search to ebay to email me when a cheap cassette deck pops up. The cd heads are a tad expensive when i've got a changer in the boot. If anyone wants an audio head with good FM/bad MW reception let me know ...
