Having recently purchased a 2010 SLK whilst playing with it noticed that the 'SMS' caption on the media Telephone display is greyed out (i.e. not selectable). A quick trawl through the handbook indicates this function is not available unless using the 'Convienience Phone', the vehicle has Blue Tooth so no need for the CP (dont have an adaptor either), as my I-Phone works perfectly well, except I cant access Text Messages on the media screen.

Has anyone with an SLK R171 or Merc with the 'Command APS NTG2.5' system been able to access displayed Text messages usinfg a regular mobile phone.

My phone is an I phone 6S and works with other cars.

Thanks

On my car 14 plate ML350, I can open a new text & read it via the COMAND screen ie if I've not already opened it via my phone itself. Once opened though, I can't access my old texts

I'm going to ask a silly question but why would anyone want to read SMS messages whilst driving?

I used to be able to write & send a text in my Omega .... it took a bl**dy long time though scrolling backwards & forward a character at a time and you'd have probably crashed the car if you'd tried while driving

Exactly my point. Talking on the phone would be less dangerous!

My 213 would read them to you, made for interesting journeys at times depending upon who the message was from and who was sat in the car with me...:D:p

Thanks Blobcat and Emilysdad for tech reponse. Futher research today would confirm that SMS texts are not avaialble on the NTG2.5 but are on all subsequent versions.

With regard to the need to read a text whilst driving, its personal choice. I personally only do it when its safe to do so and would not when doing 155 on the Autobahn, as I would'nt drink coffee, eat a sandwich, smoke /vape etc etc. unless I deemed it safe to do so, a little like exceeding the speed limit :(

Wasn't having a go at you if it came across that way - I'm just surprised manufacturers even added it as a feature!

A text is normally only half a dozen words .... not War & Peace, you get more than that scrolling across the radio display with track info
