E-Class W211 E240 Elegance

This is one man’s opinion but which generation of E-Class do forum members think is the best?

W/S212 E class 350cdi EU5 (2012-13) - MBs best effort for performance, build quality and reliability in the modern era.

I still miss my OM613 in the S210 as said a shame about the rusty bodywork

W124. Simplicity at its finest and over engineered.
Ask any Merc specialist - it was the last real mercedes.

1998/2001 W210 E280 x2 SOLD 2004 W211 E55 SOLD, 2014 E63 Biturbo SOLD .S204 C180K
W124 for comfort and build quality
W/S212 E63 Biturbo facelift model for fun driving ( W213 probably better but haven't tried one ........yet!)
W211 Has a timeless design and so well put together.
W210 again really comfortable, but let down badly with rust issues.

So good I'm on my 2nd one. Really missed the first after selling it.
Hunted down the lowest mileage, best history example and best spec I could find for sale.
Intend keeping it for a long time.

The ones I've owned and in preference: -

W213 E63s
W212 E63
W211 E55
W210 E320

The W213 was a phenomenal car, just not for me at the time unfortunately, though I'd have no hesitancy in recommending them. I loved the W212 and spent lots of time and money getting it to how I wanted it but then got fed up with it, this being something I often do.

The E55 was my first AMG and would have been a keeper were it not for the fact that I was doing anywhere between 600 - 1,000 miles per week with work so it was a bit impractical really.

The W210 was typical of it's time and was, as is their way, leaving little piles of rust everywhere I parked it. It was the straight 6 engine which was a superb workhorse though and covered many miles. I part exchanged it for a W208 320.

The only one missing from my ownership is the W124. I was after one a while ago and nearly bought a very tidy 500E but thought it overpriced at £18k, so bought a W201 2.5-16 instead. £18k. Good ones are currently bringing between £35k - £65k so it looks like I won't be having one anytime soon...

Bit of 50/50 really, Porsche did a lot of assembly work but with MB parts. It was the transferance between the factories which killed any profits apparently, that and the excessive build time.

Incredible motors though...

S500 (W222) 2014. Turbo 4.7 V8 with loads of toys. Superfast luxury.
W211, timeless looks, first of the galvanised bodies and great with the 500 engine. Ran one for 11 years and although I fancied the E63, in real terms the 500 was faster than needed.

W124 imo.
Aunts and uncles had a few and the 400e and 500e give me more memorable smiles than many so called modern masterpieces.

One would hope that the new W214 would be the best E Class surely ? :)

Sadly it seems modern stuff is lucky if it can drag itself out of the showroom with throwing a hissy fit let alone intergalactic miles with usual upkeep. Sad as when times allow me to splash I can’t see anything worth buying that would be headache free.

W212 or S212 with the 350 engine, I had an S212 E350 Bluetec which was faultless from new in 2016 to the time I sold it in October last year (big mistake), it was so smooth with loads of torque and really good fuel efficiency.

That’s the dilemma I have!

I’m currently looking at 213 E43 estates but at post pandemic prices, ie £35-40k for a 3/4 year old car with 30-50k miles already on it it doesn’t wet the appetite and some of them appear to be ‘very used’ it makes my immaculate
S212 look like a bargain to a new owner. Like you I’m not convinced about the durability of post 2013 MBs and I don’t like the idea of extending warranties to cover lack of quality

Or am I being overly pessemistic?
