Hi, What is the best oil to put in your engine? Some people say you should use fully synthetic, but my car (c180 auto 1996) which has done 7000 is being serviced this week, and the garage uses semi synthetic.
Should I insist on them using Fully synthetic?
Thanks Roy.

What has been used before? it is usually listed in the service book.
If synth I would keep it that way. Mobil1 is good and you can get deals form Costco I beleive.
If it has had smei synth then if you change regularly you should be fine.

I think the most important issue is to use the correct oil for your car. The relevant information is contained in the service part of the owners manual. you should be looking for an oil with a mercedes spec designation i.e MB 22x.x

The extracts below are from the book for a CDI engine

Also ensure the right viscosity for our ambient temperatures.

Many people swear by fully-synth oils (myself included) but even a mineral oil will provide adequate protection provided it acheives the required specification and is changed at the reccomended intervals. I suspect that the fully-synth oils are really only of benefit if you plan to keep a vehicle for more than 150-200k.

Talk to your garage and take the service book with you and compare it to the labels on the oil they propose to use.
