I was out recording aircraft sounds today for work (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tom.jeffs4/jet landing directly overhead 1.wma for instance), and while I was at it I thought I'd record my engine. Because obviously it sounds like a jet :)

Anyhow, here it is. If you have an unusual noise on your diesel maybe it would help to hear this as a comparison. Alternatively, maybe you can all point out the various scary noises that I haven't heard!

OM 606 NA? It sounds just like mine did, at 208,000 miles. Sweet.

By the way, how did you record it?

Turbo.

Technically, Sennheiser MKH60 and MKH 30 in an M&S configuration in a Rycote basket, matrixed to L&R and mixed on an SQN4 s4 portable mixer and recorded onto an Archos AV400, then converted to WMA on the computer with Goldwave.

Its recorded in prologic stereo.

Mine's a bit more clattery than that. Hoping an oil change may quiet it down a bit. May even check the the injection timing.

BTW, I've often wondered why people don't post sound clips instead of trying to explain strange noises. I know we're not all professional sound recordists, but even a mobile phone recording can be of help. ('a recording says a thousand words' - as I say)

I had a job to tell which was the plane and which was the car

Not sure about sounds for engine faults though, could be interesting, I could hear that your MAF needed cleaning

Didn't hear the turbo!

I use M&S in the studio a lot, particularly for drum overheads, and also on grand piano. I monitor through a L&R matrix but record the M and S for decoding on mixdown. I don't do much recording outdoors though...

When I was in Sweden doing work for Swedish Radio we used EELA consoles in all of the studios, and Studer 64 ch in the mainlive studios, the worst thing we had was a soundcraft desk in the OB bus, that was a noisy thing, I doubt that they still use them. They were all boring things to work on, so many faders all the same. It was interesting though.
Maybe we could have an OB unit to go round and listen to peoples cars.

is horrible under load ! or is it the cats/exhaust/driveshaft???
I suspected the cats having HAD to drive through an axle deep flooded road (wagon up my a***) but I cant hear a thing in park or neutral when revved. when accelerating in any gear there is a horrible rattle from under the car which disappears when you ease off the gas. the noise is obviously louder when bounced back off walls/houses/parked cars etc. car is running perfectly as usual but I`m worried I`m damaging something. any ideas you experts ??

heh, from cold my engine sounds terrible as one glow plug isn't working. Nah, the engine was nice and warm, I'd been driving around recording aircraft and things.

Mine's got glowplugs down too, hoping it'll sound better when I pluck up the courage to change them (and find some duraterms at a reasonable price).

Yes it is the gas passing through, worse when you rev it under load,it will only be one if its a V6. I have forgotten the car.
